This is an exciting time for cancer biology especially with the advent of epigenetics and chromatin biology. New molecules with tumor suppressive or oncogenic roles are currently identified and characterized paving the way for new therapeutic ways but, at the same time, posing new challenges for researchers. This area of cancer epigenetics is my personal and laboratory's focus. To study this perplexing biology we use patient samples and disease-relevant mouse models. In my free time I like playing soccer and basketball, spending time with friends and my family and trying the different types of food and cuisines of Chicago.

Epigenetic alterations are of great importance in a cell's transformation to malignant, and their manipulation holds great promise for cancer prevention, detection, and therapy. I’m intrigued by studying the mechanism of epigenetic alterations resulting in the hematopoietic malignancy as well as transforming findings from our group into new ways to diagnose and treat patients. In my leisure time, I enjoy going outside with my family and watching NBA games.

My scientific interest lies with Cancer biology, epigenetics and deubiquitination in blood tumors. I believe that this type of research can reveal tum or-specific vulnerabilities in leukemia. During weekends I enjoy the Chicago restaurant scene and time with my family.

Epigenetics has been on the rise as a ‘buzz word’ in the biomedical field and will likely continue to be a hot topic – recent history has shown how research in this area has led to new therapies in a diverse array of diseases. As a student I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn more about this field and how it plays a part in a disease like leukemia that can be so devastating. Outside of the science sphere I’m a fan of trying new restaurants, graphic design, and doughnuts.

Blanca Gutierrez (Graduate Student)As a young kid, back in Mexico, I dreamt of working in the field cancer research on day. I am excited about the realization of my dreams through my work at Northwestern University and the Ntziachristos' lab. The goal of my research is to characterize mechanism of resistance to chemotherapy in leukemia, Outside the lab, I ride my bike and enjoy the Midwestern nature.

Having worked in the field of cancer for the last 15 years, I am dedicated to discover how cancer develops and eager to explore a way to cure it. I am intrigued by the possibility of utilizing mouse models of cancer and biochemical studies to find a treatment for leukemia. Being a member of the Ntziachristos Lab gives me an opportunity to do such research and apply these techniques allowing me to dedicate my best efforts to contribute to progress in the field. During my spare time, I spend time with my family. |
